Just an hour outside of Dallas, nestled into the East Texas territory lies Purtis Creek State Park. With a 355-acre lake, various hiking trails, and relaxing campgrounds, this state park is your answer to a completely satisfying weekend. Let us tell you all about it!

THINGS TO DO

“The primary focus of this park was to provide world class fishing opportunities for the people of Texas.”

Since its creation in 1975, Purtis Creek State Park has aimed to be a space for high quality fishing. Anglers from all over Texas come to land some absolute lunkers! Aaron Johnston, Park Superintendent, shared with us that fishermen and women can hook bass anywhere from 13 pounds and up! These are some monsters! Other fish you can find in the lake here include crappie, catfish, sunfish, and so on.

Though fishing tends to be the major draw to Purtis Creek when it comes to activities, there is plenty more to do. Rent some kayaks from the self-serve machine near the waterfront in the day-use area. Embark on a great hike on either the Wolfpen or Beaver Slide trails. Love biking? Wolfpen even has a great mountain biking section. Click here for more information on the trails and points of interest!

If you are looking for something a little more involved, Purtis Creek also hosts a large number of classes and events. The majority of these super fun activities come free with your park entry. How awesome! These events range from anywhere from fishing with the ranger, “art in the park”, and many guided hikes. While we were on our visit here at Purtis Creek, they were even setting-up for a huge youth archery tournament. There is just loads of fun to be had here!

Take advantage of the lovely weather and enjoy Purtis Creek State Park today! Turn a boring Tuesday into an exciting outdoor adventure! ☀️ #betteroutside #purtiscreekstatepark #texasstateparks

SOLITUDE

“Our defining feature, the most treasured by our visitors, is just the peaceful, quiet environment.”

While there is just a full smorgasbord of activities to do at Purtis Creek, Aaron shared with us that the most sought-after characteristic of the park is its calming atmosphere. The park itself is far off from any major cities or highways, allowing the calming sounds of nature to fill the air. This feature of the park allows for some incredible camping experiences. There is nothing quite like staring up through your tent a catching a glimpse of the serene night sky.

Because the park is so peaceful, lots of animals have made their home here at Purtis Creek. During your visit at the park, it is common to see America’s most celebrated creature, the bald eagle. Before and after our interview with Aaron, we watch one of the majestic birds soar and snatch a fish from the lake. It’s moments like these that make this state park just so special.

Since the park is just a day’s trip from Dallas and Houston, Purtis Creek gets many visitors from bustling big cities. If you are looking for a nature retreat to ease your mind from the busyness of life, you will find your sanctuary here! Whether you live far away or are an East Texas local, make your next weekend plans to soak in all that nature has to offer at Purtis Lake State Park!
