Beer has been brewed around the entire world for thousands of years, starting back with many ancient civilizations such as in China, Mesopotamia, and Egypt. Here in East Texas though, there’s a new option that has opened in Lufkin!

Rusty Axe Brewing Company, a bistro and brewpub, brings over two decades of brewing experience to the residents of East Texas with Head Brewer Trey Allen at the helm.

“I’ve been a home brewer for over 23 years, and I had slowly but surely built up enough of a fan base,” said Allen. “We just want to give people quality, not quantity. To give them something that they talk about and can be proud of that’s in their community and want to come back here.”

After brewing at home for many years and being a brewer at a previous brewery in Lufkin, Allen took the chance to start his own business after meeting Troy & GG Tiemann, who would become his partners, back in 2020. They already owned the building that would become Rusty Axe Brewing, so after two and half years of planning and building it all up, Rusty Axe Brewing was born.

“The building is roughly 100 years old, but the brick walls on the north and south side and the roof is the only thing left that is original,” said Allen. “We even replaced the dirt in here it had to go literally from the ground up in this space.”

The beers are constantly rotating, with 12 on tap at all times. Five of those taps stay dedicated to their flagship ales while the rest change out. Allen mentioned that he has made over 80 types of beer that is served year-round to change and circulate what customers can experience.

And of course, when you have beer and your friends all together, you’re going to want some food! Being a bistro as well, Rusty Axe Brewing offers a full menu to enjoy with wood-fired pizzas to die for. To top off the community aspect, while dining and drinking with your friends (and soon-to-be friends!) you can enjoy local live music on the weekends and of course special events, such as Oktoberfest and St. Patrick’s Day, throughout the year.
